History & Background

Letter Boxed launched on February 1, 2019, as the third game in the New York Times puzzle section. It was created by Sam Ezersky, a puzzle constructor who had been publishing in the NYT since age 17 and joined the NYT Games team in 2017.

This section covers everything behind the game itself: the creator’s background and design philosophy, the NYT Games timeline from the 1942 crossword to the 2025 paywall decision, how each daily puzzle is constructed, and where the game sits within the broader NYT subscription strategy.

If you play Letter Boxed daily and want to understand what you are actually playing, the guides here give you that context.
